The portrait is a dialogue between the sitter and the artist. I came to make portraits out of the discipline of figurative painting. When possible, I like to paint a portrait directly from life, especially a head portrait. When not possible, I make color studies in oil of the subject and his or her surroundings, concentrating on color and light and getting to know the person; then augmenting these with photographs. With groups, the process is the same — studies of each person, color study of the setting — but relying more on photography to get a satisfactory grouping.
