Figurative Before 1990

In my early days in New York City, I became fascinated by people coming and going; capturing them first in watercolor, then in oil. I watched them, followed them, sketched and photographed them as they walked and/or gathered in groups in the canyons and on the plazas of Wall Street.

The paintings from 1984-1989 are based on photographs and drawings I made in the lobby of World Trade Tower II. Reflected sunlight cascaded into the lobby near the elevators in the spring and fall. The people who were passing through seemed to dissolve in the brilliance of the reflected sunlight; then they disappeared into or emerged from the dark spaces of the elevators. It is shattering that light and space broke apart one day into dust and bits.
